We all want to be David in the story of David and Goliath. But the truth is that we all have some of both characters within us. The question is which one will dominate our consciousness and teach us how to fight with spiritual weapons that ultimately bring peace. To be David and not Goliath, we need moral clarity about why we fight and for whom. Our vocation is to defend the weak against the mighty. That also takes courage to act—not just to see clearly but to act boldly. Added to these is the need to for strategic cunning, a way of acting that refuses to employ unjust means to achieve just ends.
Faith should consistently lead us to treat migrants with respect and not undermine their humanity by treating them as alien invaders. It should call us to support the cause of Palestinian liberation just as much as Israel’s security. It should lead us to embrace religious pluralism and not promote Christian nationalism.
